For the uninitiated: The female music group, a global sensation in the 90s that sold 75 million records, consisted of Posh Spice (Victoria [Adams] Beckham), Ginger Spice (Geri Halliwell), Sporty Spice (Melanie Chisholm), Baby Spice (Emma Bunton), and Scary Spice (Melanie Brown).
The musical, about a female band that enters a TV talent show, is a rags-to-riches tale that highlights the theme of “girl power,” and it will, of course, feature Spice Girls songs. Top talent has jumped aboard the musical bandwagon: Judy Craymer is the show’s producer—the highly talented lady who produced the global smash-hit musical Mamma Mia. (Mamma Mia did well in the US, but its success here paled compared to the musical’s success elsewhere on the globe, especially across Europe.) And comedian Jennifer Saunders is the show’s scriptwriter—she’s s a British BAFTA-ward-winning writer who co-created and starred in the wildly popular TV sitcom Absolutely Fabulous.
We wait with bated breath…well, if not “bated” breath, at least with breath…to see how the show does. Will it be made into a movie? Will there be merchandise?
The musical opens November 27, 2012, at London’s Piccadilly Theatre. So go find your platform shoes and start saving your shekels for that ticket to London!
