a Question for you. . . .

Dear Anglophiles: Here at Anglophiles United, my goal is to provide news, information, and entertainment that is British-themed for those who love Britain as much as I do.  But today, I have a question for you!  I'm heading to London and would like to know your favorite off-the-beaten-track spots in the capital city.  Do you know of any hidden gems?  Spots that "wow" you?  As they say: "Inquiring minds want to know!"

Hmmm tough question. Watching the pelicans in St.James Park and any Hummus Bros. But my favorite undiscovered Place are any black cab drivers. Knowledgeable, friendly and extraordinarily kind.

Ohh, feeding the pelicans at St. James Park does sound lovely, Beth! Thank you much! (And yes, those taxi drivers are the best!)

If you don't mind traveliling about 1h 1/2 south from central London, then I can recommend Hever Castle & Gardens. A beautiful little castle (with lots of Henry VIII related history) and perfect gardens for leisurely stroll/picnic. They also have jousting events (check if that is on when you plan to visit if you like that kind of thing). You could go by train (1h) from Victoria station with Southern railway to Edenbridge then take a bus from there (+ a 5 min walk) or just take a taxi/Uber from Edenbridge.

Barbara, thank you so much for your response! I love having little-known places in London (or in all of Britain, for that matter) on file!

Corfe castle in Dorset and Bodium castle in Sussex. Also Tintagel Castle Cornwall
All ruins but stunningly perfect.
Then there are the old tin mines also in Cornwall. Some of them are are on rock shelves only a few yards from the sea, they mined out under the water 2-3 hundred years ago.
The Cornish miners were considered the Commandoes of the mining industry and were recruited the world over for their skills.
The whole region of Somerset and Cornwall, the west, is steeped in history and beyond beautiful. Seaside towns and villages in tiny rocky coves, some with streets made of stairs as the towns are built into the cliffs. The land of smugglers, pirates, wreckers and sea captains.
Visit St Michaels mount, an island connected to the mainland by a causeway.
The island is tiny and built all over with a 16th century chapel and dwellings dating to the 12th century. It can only be reached, if walking, at low tide. You will need extra sd cards for your camera because you'll take a million photo's.
Then there's Dartmoor where you may see a wild pony or perhaps the Hound of the Baskervilles as this is where it was set.
There are thousands of sites to explore from the neolithic to the present, stone circles, Glastonbury with its tor, standing stones, ruined abbey and claimed Arthurs and Guineveres tomb. Stonehenge, barrow tombs, the prehistoric earthwork Cadbury castle where Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table are said to be sleeping inside the earthwork ready to emerge should England be in peril. It is said that on some nights you can hear them as they ride their horses down to the river to drink.
Then there's the caves at Wookey Hole and their legendary witch and Chedder cheeses and the caves at Chedder gorge itself.
I could go on forever and wish I could go with you but I live 'down under' now. Maybe next year.

Dave, what a great list of suggestions! Thank you very much! Many of those are quite new to me. Hope you're enjoying Oz--and that you get to return to England. I sense you love the UK as much as I do!

Oh sorry you just wanted sites in London.
Greenwich with the Cutty Sark the Seamans Hospital Royal Maritime Museum, Wren architecture.
The Royal Observatory on the hill in the park where you can straddle the prime meridian.
Parliament hill on Hamstead Heath where artists have painted the cityscape for centuries.
The London Silver Vaults on Chancery Lane, take sunglasses lots of bling.
The Inns of Court, ancient home of lawyers.

Dave, no, your list of "hidden places" in the UK was brilliant! These London sites are great too. Thank you!
