Footage of London, circa 1920s!

NOTICE: Dear Anglophiles, I am currently working on a large writing project and will be unable to blog for a while . . . however, I won't leave you hanging!  Each day I receive scores of interesting emails about Britain and British news, so my future blog posts, until I finish my writing project, will consist of links to some of these wonderful tidbits about Britain or videos that I find particularly interesting.  I hope you enjoy these nuggets!  (I also encourage readers to contact me about writing guest posts.)  Thank you so much for reading Anglophiles United!

Picture
London: Then and now!

The wonderful video below was shot in London in the mid-1920s by Claude Friese-Greene, a British pioneer of colorized cinematography.  His method of colorizing film, called Friese-Greene Natural Colour--done during the age of silent movies--never caught on, and eventually was eclipsed by the Kenemacolor technique, also developed in Britain, and then by the Technicolor technique, developed in America.

If you're a fan of Downton Abbey (and who isn't?), the video is of special significance.  Downton's beginning episodes took place in 1916; when the show's third series airs this winter, the episodes will take place in the early 1920s, right before this footage was shot.  How delightful to have such insight into the time period of our beloved Downton!

Dear Anglophiles:  I must share a fascinating obituary I read in the Economist about Bill O'Hagan, the "pioneer of Britain's sausage renaissance."  Bill, who got rid of the "nasties" in sausage and was crowed by the British Sausage Appreciation Society as the best sausage-maker in the country, made little money from his brilliant creations.  Sadly, a former employee who, allegedly, left with some of Bill's recipes, received all the fame and fortune.

Would you like to try your own hand at sausage making?  If so, you're in luck!  I discovered a site that offers simple recipes for nearly every type of sausage one can imagine--and the recipes give both metric and U.S. measurements!

Dear Anglophiles: A fabulous new photography exhibit Cairo to Constantinople: Early Photographs of the Middle East is now showing at The Queen's Gallery at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, and will later exhibit in London, at Buckingham Palace.  If you won't be in the UK to partake of this breathtaking exhibit, you're still in luck!  A companion spin-off from the photography exhibit, entitled In a Prince's Footsteps, is now playing on BBC Radio 4, and we can all listen to the the latest episodes of the program online--and see some of the historic photographs, too!

The PR blurb for the Cairo to Constantinople photography exhibit describes the exhibit as thus: "In 1862, the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) was sent on a four-month educational tour of the Middle East, accompanied by the British photographer Francis Bedford (1815-94). This exhibition documents his journey through the work of Bedford, the first photographer to travel on a royal tour. . . . The tour took the Prince [and Bedford] to Egypt, Palestine and the Holy Land, Syria, Lebanon, Turkey and Greece."

The photo exhibit's companion spin-off, In a Prince's Footsteps, retraces the Prince's footsteps through the exotic Middle East, comparing what was seen by the Prince then to what one sees today.   (Hear the program episodes by clicking the links below!)

Cairo to Constantinople photo exhibit dates:
Palace of Holyroodhouse: March 8, 2013 - July 21, 2013
Buckingham Palace: October 31, 2014 - February 22, 2015

Eighty-one years ago today, the famed aviator Amelia Earhart set off on her record-breaking, transatlantic flight.  She left Newfoundland and landed 15 hours later in Londonderry, Northern Ireland.

To see a slideshow about Earhart's flight and arrival in Londonderry (which includes some historic, never-before-seen photographs), click HERE

As readers undoubtedly know, Earhart's plane went down on a later expedition as she tried flying around the world.  Her plane has never been found.  To read an article about the latest search efforts for Earhart's lost plane, click HERE

Dear Anglophiles:  I received a link to a free, downloadable eBook that I must share with you; it's entitled Kilts & Tartans Made Easy.  This eBook, of course, made me think of lovely Scotland, so you'll find various links below that celebrate Scotland and its heritage.  Enjoy!

To read or download Kilts & Tartans Made Easy, click HERE

And just what is worn beneath those kilts, you ask?  To the rest of the world, this factoid is top secret . . . but we Anglophiles deserve to be in the know, right?  To discover the definitive answer, click HERE  (And please remember where you learned this bit of Anglophile trivia: right here on Anglophiles United!)

The national dish of Scotland is haggis, a meat and oatmeal concoction.  The more traditional recipes for haggis contain various ingredients that are difficult to find on this side of the pond, so I've found one for you that uses ingredients easily found in North America.  To view Haggis recipe, click  HERE

When one thinks of Scotland, one thinks of the wailful, haunting sounds of  bagpipes.  Below are two videos (a short version and a long version) featuring the best of the best in Scottish bagpipes.
