News alert! Dear Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, is sporting a new hairstyle. The cut is not terribly different--but the Duchess now has bangs...or "fringe," as the British say. I can't say I prefer the new look. Methinks the long, sweeping bangs will constantly fall over her eyes as she speaks at podiums. But as I always say after my own haircut blunders, "At least hair grows back!" To see photos of Kate's new 'do, click HERE

![]() Check out this adorable, British postal box birdhouse. Like looking at babies or puppies, the proper Anglophile can only look at the birdhouse and gurgle, "Awwww......." The birdhouse is sold by Kinsman Company, a garden supply firm. Of course, the little British post box made me think of the larger British post boxes and the article that guest writer David Harding wrote for Anglophiles United called The Mysteries of the British Post Box. ![]() The large, red boxes in Britain are technically called "pillar boxes," and they have a very curious history. Please check it out! Go to: THE ROYALS Go to: VISIT BRITAIN Go to: BEST TIMES TO VISIT BRITAIN Go to: WHEN TO FIND BEST AIRFARES Go to: ANGLOPHILES UNITED MARKET Go to: HOMEPAGE Here in the U.S., the Thanksgiving weekend is winding to a close. I do hope Anglophiles on this side of the pond had a lovely holiday. I'm happy to add a slash of cheer by announcing that tonight, many PBS stations are carrying DOWNTON ABBEY REVISITED. Being betwixt the show's seasons as we are, this "revisited" episode offers crumbs for the hungry. The show will highlight great moments from the series' first two seasons, including behind-the-scenes footage--and give us a sneak preview of Season 3. (I can hardly wait to see Shirley MacLaine play Martha Levinson, a widowed American heiress. I have no doubt that her character and Maggie Smith's Dowager Countess character will spar brilliantly!) Season 3 begins airing in the US on January 6, 2013. Here is the PBS trailer for Downton Abbey Revisit. (Be sure to check your local TV listings to get the lowdown for your area.)

Go to: BRITISH TELEVISION Go to: BRITISH RADIO Go to: VISIT BRITAIN Go to: HOMEPAGE ![]() In the U.S., Thanksgiving Day is upon us! (Note to U.K. readers: As you may know, Thanksgiving is one of the major U.S. holidays. President Abraham Lincoln created the holiday 1863 by declaring a national day of “Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens.” Americans generally recognize, however, that the first Thanksgiving was held after the Pilgrims harvested their bountiful crop in the New World in 1621. Native Americans and Pilgrims feasted together, and all was good—though that didn’t last long, did it?) I do think an annual day for counting one’s blessings is a good thing, even if we quibble about what constitutes a “blessing.” In my mind, Britain’s Sir David Attenborough’s video What a Wonderful World exemplifies the idea of being blessed. As my U.S. readers may (or may not) know, Sir David is Britain’s foremost naturalist. He’s best known for his natural history film-making and broadcasting. I’m taking a few days off from blogging for the Thanksgiving holiday, but I’ll leave you with Attenborough’s wonderful creation… Happy Thanksgiving to all my U.S. Anglophile friends!
![]() I was out of town when SKYFALL opened here in the U.S. but finally had a chance to see it last weekend. It ranks as one of my all-time favorite James Bond movies. For those of you who haven't seen the movie, I'll try not to give away anything, but here is what I most enjoyed about the movie:
![]() As many of you may know, back in February, Judi announced that she has macular degeneration (as did her mother). So it was bittersweet watching her incredible performance in Skyfall. I send Judi my heartfelt love and well wishes. Huffington Post recently carried an article about her; if you wish to read it, click HERE (Note: the article does issue a SPOILER ALERT) *****************************************
Go to: BRITISH MOVIES Go to: BRITISH MUSIC Go to: BRITISH BOOKS Go to: HOMEPAGE I would like to give another shout out to THE WORD, an online, educational website for Czech language speakers wanting to learn English. The Word's editor, Jacy Meyer, interviewed me a couple of weeks ago for an article she wrote about Anglophiles, called Brit Love. Today she wrote a follow-up article, entitled Reverse Anglophiles, which gives my take on what to call Britons who love American culture.
To read the article REVERSE ANGLOPHILES, click HERE The Word is a subscription service that features a daily news article--each presented at three different language levels, ranging from easier to harder to read. Each news article also offers vocabulary tips. I hope that my Czech readers check out this website and pass along the word about The Word! To visit THE WORD homepage, click HERE If you have a suggested word to call "reverse Anglophiles" (i.e., Britons who love American culture), let's hear it! ![]() I would like to remind US Anglophiles that the deadline for entering this unique Cunard sweepstakes is approaching. If you've not entered, do so now! (If you have little faith in games of chance, consider this: A friend I grew up with won $58.5 million. Somebody had to win that prize, and she did.) Best of luck, dear Anglophile friends! Cunard’s “Cross the Pond Sweepstakes”
