As you may know, today is Pi Day! With the beginning numbers of Pi being 3.14, the day is observed on March 14 (i.e., 3/14). Larry Shaw, a physicist at the San Francisco Exploratorium, came up with the idea of paying homage to Pi in 1988.
Shaw was retired from the museum by then, but he got together a gaggle of museum staffers and members of the public and proceeded to parade them around in circles, then culminated the celebration by feeding the group fruit pies. Eleven years later, the US House of Representatives formally recognized "National Pi Day," but the day didn't become a true phenomenon until the next year, when the Internet got a hold of it, and Google commemorated the day with a special Google doodle on its homepage. Now, Pi groupies and nerds the world over love to recognize Pi Day. One of my favorite ways to celebrate is by listening to British singer/songwriter/musician Kate Bush sing her hauntingly beautiful song Pi. |
