Dear Anglophiles, it's time to say adieu to our beloved Downton Abbey. Tonight, Sunday, March 6, the final episode (ever) will air in the US on PBS, at 9 pm, ET. Downton isn't just a "show"; it's been a phenomenon! Sure, sometimes the writing got a little sappy, and sometimes we wanted to shake the characters by the shoulders and shout things like, "Lady Mary, get over yourself!" Or, "Quit sniveling, Lady Edith!" Or, "Just kiss her, Mr. Carson!" Or, more likely, a comment all of us have had on our lips, "Ohhh, dear Dowager Countess, how I love you!!"

Hi Zella, thank you for this wonderfull website ! I am Belgian, 57, and quite an anglophile myself...It probably started by reading Wodehouse when I was 16 years or so, my first English novel I ever read in English. My mother tongue is Dutch , but now I live in the french speaking part of Belgium. My heart is british, I can't explain.... and Downton Abbey did all but cure me ! Last ever episode yesterday on tv........ It hasn't aired in the the States yet, has it... well, keep your box off hankies ready! Best wishes, Rebecca

Dear Rebecca: Thank you for writing. I completely understand how those Wodehouse books can turn one into an Anglophile! And thank you for the Downton Abbey hankie alert--the final season's first episode aired here in the States last night. The experience of Downton Abbey reminds me of owning a pet cat or dog: You love it mightily but you know it will not be with you forever!
